Eye Examination

VDU Examination

At some point in the day, almost everyone looks at some form of computer screen. This could be in the form of anything from a Kindle, an EPOS screen, laptops, mobile phones, or computer monitors for the purpose of either work or leisure.

Eye Health Risks for VDU Users

People who work with electronic screens are prone to eye diseases such as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). This is common among people who use VDU screens at work. These screens can cause stress and issues with the eyes, with symptoms such as blurred vision and sore eyes. If you experience dry eyes, eyestrain, headaches, or difficulty focusing during or after using a VDU screen, chances are you may have CVS and need to take measures to avoid it.

What to Expect During Your Eye Examination

Your eye examination will include questions regarding the kind of VDU screen you use at work or at home to check whether you are facing any problems. The amount of focus and muscle work your eyes do can be assessed during the examination, and you will be advised accordingly.

Tips for People Using Computer Screens at Work

  1. Take Regular Breaks
The main risk to your eyes comes from staring at a screen for too long. Take regular breaks every twenty minutes to look away from the screen. This provides sufficient rest for your eyes.

  2. Adjust Your Monitor or Screen
Most screens allow you to adjust the contrast to minimize stress on the eyes. Increasing the font size or zooming in can also reduce eye strain.

  3. Reduce Glare
Check for lights around your screen to ensure there are no bright lights or reflections causing glare. Anti-glare screens can help reduce damaging reflections.

  4. Blink Consistently
While focusing on a screen, people often blink less, leading to dry eyes. This symptom is more common among contact lens users. Regular blinking or consulting an optometrist for appropriate eye drops can help alleviate this issue.

  5. Schedule Regular Eye Care Appointments
Adults are advised to have an eye examination every two years. Regular visits can help detect early signs of eye diseases or minor problems.

Employer Responsibility for VDU Users

If you use a VDU screen at work, you are entitled to regular eye checks funded by your employer under European legislation. Employees using VDU screens should receive an eye examination at the start of their employment and at regular intervals thereafter. If an eye issue arises, your employer must cover the cost of an examination. Should glasses be required for VDU use, the employer is obliged to pay for a basic pair. If you opt for a more expensive pair, you will need to cover the difference.
